Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, December 18) — Around 6,700 people in Mindanao have been displaced by the combined effects of Tropical Depression Kabayan (Jelawat) and shear line, the national disaster management agency said Monday.
In its latest bulletin, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said affected individuals came from 43 barangays in Caraga region. At least 6,370 people, or 2,072 families, are currently staying in evacuation centers while 353 people, or 118 families, are residing outside of evacuation centers.
The agency also reported that 11,729 persons, or 3,428 families, from Caraga and Northern Mindanao, were pre-emptively evacuated due to the possible effects of the bad weather.
Based on its initial data, two houses in Surigao del Sur were damaged.
In Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur — a town rocked by a magnitude 7.4 earthquake in early December — 12,241 people, or 3,173 families, are currently staying in 39 evacuation centers, local disaster management officials said.
The Hinatuan government said 501 family food packs are ready for release.
Meanwhile, the provincial government of Davao Oriental said it pre-positioned supplies, food packs, kitchen kits, and sleeping kits at its warehouse to supplement the resources of local government units affected by Kabayan.
Many areas in Mindanao were under Signal No. 1 due to Tropical Depression Kabayan.
