Over 4,000 aftershocks logged from 2 major Surigao del Sur quakes

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, December 7)— The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) has logged as of Thursday morning a total of 4,552 aftershocks from the Dec. 2 magnitude 7.4 earthquake and the Dec. 4 magnitude 6.8 earthquake in Surigao del Sur.

According to the NDRRMC’s 8 a.m. situational report, the Hinatuan municipality recorded 3,302 aftershocks from the magnitude 7.4 earthquake. It was felt in 38 areas with 1.4 to 6.6 magnitude range.

In Cagwait municipality, there were 1,250 recorded aftershocks from the magnitude 6.8 earthquake. The magnitude felt in nine areas ranges from 1.4 to 5.8.

“The highest intensity reported was Intensity VII in the City of Tandag, Surigao del Sur. The earthquake was associated with the subduction along the Philippine Trench,” the NDRRMC said.

The NDRRMC noted that the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) issued a Tsunami Warning No. 1 on Dec. 2, but it was canceled at 3:23 a.m on Dec. 3 after confirming that a tsunami occurred with preliminary wave heights in parts of Surigao del Sur, Surigao del Norte, and Davao Oriental.

The agency said as of Thursday, three people were confirmed dead while three were still for validation, and 48 were injured. It also reported that 132,628 families, or 528,295 persons, in three regions were affected, and 19 cities and municipalities declared a state of calamity.

The agency added that there were 382 damaged infrastructure with an estimated cost of P7,773,000. Seven roads and two bridge sections were affected. In agriculture, there was no reported damage yet.

In all, 94 cities and municipalities had power or electricity interruptions but 65% of these were already restored, while 19 communication lines in the areas have been fully restored.

Meanwhile, classes and work were suspended in 85 and 44 areas, respectively.

The NDRRMC also reported that the Department of Social Welfare and Development, local government units, and Office of Civil Defense provided assistance worth P3,935,406.

As of this writing, Phivolcs is still detecting aftershocks in Surigao Del Sur.
