Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, December 4) – State seismologists have recorded a series of earthquakes that shook the towns of Hinatuan and Cagwait in Surigao del Sur after the two areas were hit by a magnitude 7.4 and 6.8 quake, respectively.
In separate earthquake advisories on Monday, Phivolcs logged another magnitude 5.5 quake in Hinatuan at 2.08 p.m., while a magnitude 5.2 aftershock was felt at 10:10 a.m.
On the same day, Phivolcs also recorded that Cagwait town experienced a magnitude 5.6 quake at 5:43 a.m. and a magnitude 5.7 quake at 10:38 a.m.
At 1:08 p.m., the agency’s data showed a magnitude 5.2 tremor in Marihatag town, which is approximately 69 kilometers from Cagwait town.
On Saturday evening, a magnitude 7.4 quake hit Hinatuan town.
Immediately after the tremor, Phivolcs warned of tsunamis expected to hit areas including the cities of Tandag and Bislig in Surigao del Sur, but canceled the alert early Sunday morning.
Early Monday morning, Cagwait town was shaken by a magnitude 6.8 quake.
While tagged as a separate quake from the Saturday tremor in Hinatuan town, Phivolcs said the 6.8 quake was similarly caused by movements in the Philippine Trench.
