6.1 quake hits waters off Sarangani

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, November 22)— A magnitude 6.1 earthquake hit waters off Balut Island in Sarangani, Davao Occidental on Wednesday morning, state seismologists said.

It was pegged as magnitude 5.8 with a depth of focus of 137 km which was felt at 10:49 a.m. in the initial advisory of Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) . An hour later, it was upgraded to magnitude 6.1 and the time was corrected to 10:48 a.m.

The quake was tectonic in origin.

The epicenter of the quake was 79 kilometers southeast of Balut Island.

Phivolcs said that there are no expected aftershocks. While no damage was reported yet.

Intensity II was felt in cities of General Santos; Glan, Alabel, Malapatan, Malungon and Kiamba. And in parts of Sarangani; Tupi, Tampakan, City of Koronadal and Tboli, as well as in South Cotabato.

Intensity I was felt in Polomolok, Surallah and Lake Sebu, South Cotabato; Maasim and Maitum in Sarangani.

Phivolcs also said that instrumental intensities were also felt in some other parts of the areas.

Instrumental Intensity II was felt in Don Marcelino, Davao Occidental, Malungon, Glan, Alabel, Kiamba, in Sarangani and Tupi and T’Boli in South Cotabato.

Instrumental Intensity I was felt in Maitum, Sarangani, General Santos City, and Lake Sebu in South Cotabato.

Last Friday, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake also shook the waters south of Sarangani bay.
