Manila North, South cemeteries collect over 200 metric tons of trash during Undas

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, November 2) — Authorities collected over 200 metric tons of garbage in Manila’s North and South cemeteries during this year’s observance of Undas.

The Manila Public Information Office said 87 truckloads or 229 metric tons of trash from the city’s main public cemeteries were collected from Oct. 28 to Nov.1.

It said during last year’s Undas, both cemeteries recorded a total of 62 truckloads or 148 metric tons of garbage.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) reminded the public on Monday to maintain cleanliness and use recycled materials during the observance of Undas.

“We should all be aware of the adverse impact of mismanaged wastes not only on our health but also on the environment and actively participate in the proper management of our wastes,” the agency said in a statement.

It said cemetery operators should also set up enough “strategically-located trash bins” and to release local ordinances for waste management.

The DENR-EMB listed some tips for cemetery visitors:

– Use recyclable containers to pack your food — from sandwiches to meals and drinks.

– Use fresh flowers or potted plants without plastic wrapping.

– Reduce food waste by bringing only a sufficient amount of food.

– Do not leave your trash behind. Clean as you go.

– Take time to throw trash in bins coded to segregate these accordingly.

– Do not burn your waste in the cemetery.
