Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, September 1) — The per kilogram cost of tomatoes in Metro Manila has spiked by up to ₱81 more compared to its price last week, Aug. 25, according to the latest monitoring of the Department of Agriculture (DA).
The ₱210 per kilogram cost of tomatoes is based on the price movement in 12 wet markets in Metro Manila: Commonwealth, Guadalupe, Las Piñas, Malabon, Marikina, Mega Q-Mart, Muntinlupa, Muñoz, Pasay, Pasig, Pritil, Quinta, and San Andres.
The price of tomatoes has gone up gradually since April, when it was at ₱60 – its lowest recorded cost in 2023.
During that month, tomatoes could not be sold in markets and were instead thrown away due to oversupply.
However, the price jumped to ₱120 per kilogram in July – ₱45 more compared to June.
The increase was attributed to the agricultural damage caused by Typhoon Egay, which hit several parts of the country, particularly northern Luzon, in late July.
In its latest bulletin, the DA said Super Typhoon Goring logged ₱375 million worth of agriculture damage.
Goring left the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Thursday.
