Gilas’ gallant stand falls short vs Dominican Republic in FIBA World Cup opener

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 25) — Gilas Pilipinas’ valiant stand was not enough to stun the Dominican Republic in their opening game at the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

Gilas absorbed an 87-81 loss to the Dominican Republic Friday at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan.

Jordan Clarkson topscored Gilas with 28 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists. He fouled out with over three minutes left in the final quarter.

NBA big man Karl-Anthony Towns poured in 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Dominican Republic.

It was a historic opening night as the crowd set the new attendance record in a FIBA World Cup game with 38,115.

Gilas was able to slice the deficit to one point midway in the fourth frame, but the Dominican Republic had a steadier offense to fend off any comeback attempt.

June Mar Fajardo and Dwight Ramos were the two other Gilas players who tallied double digits with 16 points and 13 points, respectively.

The Philippines will try to bounce back against Angola on Aug. 27 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
