Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 19) — A 26-year-old man severed his left foot and sustained abrasions on the head after jumping onto the tracks of the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1) Blumentritt Station as a train was approaching on Saturday morning.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) reported that first responders rescued the passenger – who was found unconscious – from under the train at around 6:33 a.m.

It said provisional service was implemented from Baclaran to Central Station at 6:12 am following the incident, and full operations of the LRT-1 resumed at 6:44 am.

“The train operator was able to immediately apply the emergency brake when the passenger jumped on the tracks,” Assistant Secretary for Railways Jorjette Aquino said in a statement.

The man was brought to the hospital and has been in stable condition as of around 9:30 a.m., the department added.

In April, a 73-year-old female passenger died after jumping onto the tracks of the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 Quezon Avenue Station.

The incident spurred talks of measures to better ensure the safety of passengers, such as putting barriers on station platforms.

The DOTr, however, said train operators in the country are following global safety standards.
