Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 19) — LRT-1 Roosevelt Station in Quezon City will be renamed after the late National Artist for Film Fernando Poe Jr. (FPJ) this Sunday.
According to Senator Grace Poe, former Senate President Tito Sotto III and Senator Lito Lapid will lead the ceremony renaming the station.
The event will also unveil a new marker bearing the name of the King of Philippine Movies.
“I hope people remember FPJ whenever they board this train,” Poe said in a statement released Saturday.
“Public service has always been in FPJ’s heart,” she also said. “Giving commuters a safe and comfortable ride is a way of keeping his legacy alive,”
“Magandang regalo kay FPJ at sa kanyang mga taga-suporta ang pagkakaroon ng isang FPJ Station (Having an FPJ Station is a beautiful gift to FPJ and his supporters),” the senator added.
The renaming is in line with Republic Act No. 11608, which renamed Roosevelt Avenue in the first legislative district of Quezon City to FPJ Avenue.
The law was authored by Lapid and sponsored by Sotto.
The renaming ceremony will also feature an FPJ pop-up exhibit.
A multi-awarded actor, producer and director, FPJ starred in about 300 films in his 46 years of acting career. He was recognized as a National Artist in 2012.
Poe said the law gave her father’s works and legacy a sense of place in the nation’s history.
FPJ’s wife, Philippine Movie Queen Susan Roces, passed away in May last year,
