
Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 13) — A magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck in waters off Sabtang, Batanes on Sunday morning, state seismologists reported.
The tremor hit 42 kilometers west of Sabtang at 9:43 a.m., and had a depth of 48 kilometers, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
Phivolcs earlier reported that the quake had a magnitude of 5.7.
Here are the reported intensities in Luzon:
Intensity V (strong) – Sabtang in Batanes
Intensity IV (moderately strong) – Basco, Mahatao, Ivana, and Uyugan in Batanes
Intensity III (weak) – Itbayat
Phivolcs said Intensity I, or scarcely perceptible shaking, was felt in Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte.
The agency warned of aftershocks due to the quake, which was tectonic in origin. Damage is not expected, it added.
