Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, July 27) — Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief General Romeo Brawner Jr. said China has offered to conduct joint military exercises with the Philippines.
“They offered us that prospect, but we have to study first,” Brawner said in an interview on the sidelines of the 96th anniversary of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army in Mandaluyong on Tuesday.
“Informal lang (The talks are still informal)… The ambassador said they submitted white papers, but we have to study,” he added.
Brawner did not disclose which area the joint exercises could be held.
The AFP chief only said the military cooperation between Manila and Beijing remains limited to sending Filipino officers to training schools in China for now.
He also lauded China’s contributions of weapons and ammunition during the Marawi siege in 2017.
The AFP chief said the Philippines is ready to work with any country when it comes to building its defensive capabilities.
“Opening up to any country who would like to help us. Right now, what we are trying to do develop our own self-reliant defense posture,” Brawner said.
Envoy: China commitment to settle issues peacefully
In a separate speech, Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Huang Xilian reiterated Beijing’s commitment to settle issues and differences through peaceful means.
“As long as the consensus between our top leaders is implemented in real earnest, we will be able to see new progress in the mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries and contribute to peace and stability in the South China Sea,” said Huang.
“China is willing to work with the Philippines to adhere to independence and good neighborliness, deepen practical cooperation in various fields, properly manage differences through consultation and dialogue,” the Chinese envoy added.
