Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, July 27) — Five persons were reported dead due to Typhoon Egay, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Thursday.
In its latest bulletin, the NDRRMC said one death was reported in the Calabarzon region, while four were recorded in the Cordillera Administrative Region.
According to Benguet Long District Rep. Eric Yap, a landslide that covered a house caused the deaths of the four individuals which included children aged four and two.
Yap also added that the province is having difficulty in monitoring the evacuees.
“Isang evacuation center hanggang tatlong pamilya lang po ang kasya. Kaya nga po sa ngayon, hindi pa po natin ma-monitor ‘yung mga na-displace ngayon,” Yap told CNN Philippines’ The Final Word.
[Translation: One evacuation center can only fit up to three families. This is why now, we cannot monitor those displaced.]
Yap said they also could not contact other areas as 60% of the area did not have electricity. He adds that many also do not have water supply.
The representative called on the government to assist the farmers in Benguet as plenty of crops were destroyed by the typhoon.
Meanwhile, Ilocos Norte Governor Matthew Manotoc told CNN Philippines’ News Night that his province recorded two deaths though these are not included in the NDRRMC’s tally.
“The rains stopped roughly at 5 a.m. but we had two deaths happen during the tail-end of the typhoon. They are typhoon-related but I’m not sure if we can attribute these directly and solely to the typhoon,” he said.
He said that one was a drunk driving case and the other was an unattended person with disability, both of whom perished due to drowning.
Meanwhile, two more individuals were injured due to Egay.
