OFWs in Russia urged to be vigilant amid armed insurrection launched by Wagner fighters

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, June 25) – The Philippine embassy in Russia has advised overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to be vigilant amid the armed insurrection launched by the Wagner Group.

In a Facebook post, OFWs in Rostov-on-Don, Belgorod and other areas near the boundaries of Russia and Ukraine were urged to report their situation to the embassy.

The Philippine embassy said OFWs should avoid crowded places as well as traveling to other regions.

Umiwas makilahok sa mga demonstrasyon, at huwag mag-post ng mga ma-politikang kumento sa social media,” the embassy said.

Magpasa lamang ng impormasyon kung ito ay totoo at kumpirmado,” it added.

According to the Department of Foreign Affairs, at least 10,000 Filipinos are in Russia.

The armed conflict began when Wagner Group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin accused the Russian military of attacking a Wagner camp and killing a “huge amount” of his men.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin recently implemented “anti-terrorist” measures to strengthen security after Prigozhin claimed that the Wagner Group took over military facilities in two Russian cities, and said his troops will take over Moscow.
