Marcos hopes to ‘renew’ ties with UAE; eyes attending UN climate change in Dubai

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, June 15) — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said his administration would “renew” its relations with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as he recognized its swift aid for Mayon evacuees and its hosting of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

The chief executive said he invited UAE Ambassador to the Philippines Mohamed Obaid Salem Alqataam Alzaabi to join him in Albay on Wednesday so that he would see for himself the situation in evacuation centers.

“Kaya ko sinama para naman makita niya kung saan pumunta ang kanilang tulong, and we have to be very grateful to them,” he said.

Marcos also disclosed that the ambassador had invited him to attend the United Nations climate conference scheduled in Dubai in December.

“I hope to be able to attend because climate change is a primordial issue when it comes to the Philippines,” he said Thursday on the sidelines of a trade forum in Taguig City.

Aside from attending the conference, the president said the government wants “to renew our ties with UAE.”

He noted that the UAE government has been “very welcoming” to OFWs and has “treated our people very well.”

“That’s something that we hope to continue and even progress further,” he said.
