La Salle completes dramatic comeback to dethrone NU as UAAP women’s volleyball champion

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 14) — The De La Salle University Lady Spikers completed a comeback victory against the National University (NU) Lady Bulldogs in Game 2 of the women’s volleyball finals, 19-25, 23-25, 25-15, 25-17, 15-10, to bag the Season 85 title Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Graduating La Salle player and Season 85 Best Setter Mars Alba was hailed the Finals Most Valuable Player.

Newly minted Rookie of the Year and Season 85 Most Valuable Player Angel Canino led the Lady Spikers with 19 points.

The Lady Bulldogs played their hearts out early in the contest as they established a commanding 2-0 set advantage.

But the Lady Spikers decided to make a run of their own, as the Taft-based squad responded in the next two sets.

Thea Gagate stepped up for La Salle during the crucial stretches of the fourth and fifth sets. Her blocking and quick hits gave the Lady Spikers the cushion needed to fend off NU.

Alyssa Solomon had a monster performance for NU as she tallied a game-high 34 points.

La Salle now has a total of 12 UAAP women’s volleyball titles.
