MJ Phillips to play for Gwangju AI Peppers in Korean V-League

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 21) — MJ Phillips will take her talents to Seoul after being the lone Filipino to be drafted in the Asian quota of the Korean V-League.

The Petro Gazz Angels middle blocker was drafted fifth overall by the Gwangju AI Peppers of the Korean volleyball tournament.

Phillips said that she is very excited to play overseas sometime this year.

“I’m just very excited. It’s been my dream since I was a little girl. So, I’m just very excited to start the season. I hope the Peppers fans are excited as well,” she said in a brief interview during the drafting ceremony.

Phillips added that fans can expect from her “a lot of grit, a lot of passion, and a lot of hard-hitting balls.”

Also drafted in the league were volleyball players from Thailand, Indonesia, and Japan. Thai national team setter Pornpun Guedpard was the first pick in the draft.

Other Filipino players who also tried out were Jia De Guzman, Dindin Santiago-Manabat, Majoy Baron, Mylene Paat, and Iris Tonelada.

Phillips is a two-time Best Middle Blocker awardee in the Premier Volleyball League.
