Cebu and Davao residents, enjoy the ballet for free this weekend at Ayala Malls

Enjoying cultural shows at little to no cost is a rare treat in the Philippines, especially in the field of ballet. But there are thankfully moments in which these spectacles are available for the wider public to enjoy. After their last visit in 2019, the American Ballet Theatre (ABT) Studio Company comes back to the Philippines this week with their new roster of stars, as well as a special performance by the country’s acclaimed pianist, Cecile Licad. This will be Licad’s first performance since the pandemic. The ABT will be performing for free this April 22 at Ayala Center Cebu, and April 23 at Ayala Malls Abreeza in Davao. The benefit performance is for the Ayala Foundation’s CENTEX program, which provides education for underserved students while providing opportunities to thrive in arts, dance, and music. If you’re ever in Cebu or Davao for the free performances, we suggest bringing a younger sibling or family member whose love for dance may be piqued by such a show. As the Ayala Foundation asserts through its CENTEX program, who knows what budding talent lies in each of us? — MARGA BUENAVENTURA

Try this new eau de parfum by Aesop, perfect for cool summer nights

Spicy scents are tricky things in warm weather, because for some noses, it does make one smell like a savory dish. It’s certainly not for everybody, but I like to believe they have a place in anyone’s perfume collection. Gloam (₱9,300/50mL), the newest scent by Aesop is another spice-forward offering, and the latest installment of their Othertopias collection by longtime collaborator Barnabé Fillion. Pink pepper and cardamom open up the scent, with neroli and orange flower complementing it with floral notes. At the depths of Gloam is a woodsy and earthiness that I’ve come to love across many Aesop scents, a subtle nod to how scents are a natural dialogue between us and essences found in the natural world. And while Gloam is admittedly not for everyone, I find that experimenting with wearing it at different times of the day can yield to varying results. The spicy and floral notes are strong in the daytime, but when worn at night, Gloam settles as a soft, almost powdery scent on me. It’s the kind that’ll make you sink into nice, cozy sheets. The scent still lingered in my night clothes the day after, and it was such a surprising pleasure that I turned it into a new step in my evening rituals. — MB
