
Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, March 31) — The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) has begun its probe into the deadly fire that hit MV Lady Mary Joy 3 off Basilan.
“Pursuant to the directive of MARINA Administrator Atty. Hernani Fabia under Special Order No. 364-23, our Enforcement Service (ES) has commenced the marine safety investigation of MV Lady Mary Joy 3,” the agency said in a statement Friday.
The vessel was carrying over 200 passengers when it caught fire along the waters of Baluk-Baluk Island, leaving at least 28 people dead.
The ferry’s operator, Aleson Shipping Lines, Inc., said it has already extended financial assistance to the victims’ families.
MARINA has also ordered the conduct of surveys on all vessels operated by Aleson.
