Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, February 23) — The government of New Zealand on Wednesday issued a warning to its citizens in the Philippines to “exercise increased caution” after one of their nationals was shot dead in Makati City last Sunday.
“New Zealanders in the Philippines are advised to be security conscious at all times and should avoid walking and travelling at night, particularly to isolated areas. No resistance should be given if you are the victim of a robbery, mugging, or carjacking as this could lead to an escalation in violence,” it said.
New Zealander tourist identified as Nicholas Peter Stacey, 34, was gunned down by two suspects on a motorcycle along Filmore Street, Barangay Palanan, Makati City at 12:25 a.m. last Feb. 19.
The government of New Zealand also warned its citizens of gun-carrying individuals and criminal gangs in Manila.
“There are high rates of violent crime throughout the Philippines, including armed robbery, assault and murder. Criminal gangs are active in the Manila area, and have drugged and robbed unsuspecting tourists. Crime is more prevalent at night, particularly in urban areas,” it said.
“Gun ownership is widespread and poorly regulated. Gunfights between police and criminals are not uncommon, including in tourist areas in Manila. Bystanders are often caught in the crossfire and have been injured and killed in such incidents,” it added.
Tourists from New Zealand were also advised to stay vigilant and to avoid wearing or showing “items that appear valuable” such as electronic devices, cameras, and jewelry.
They were also advised to take Grab Taxis to travel as these are safer than public transport.
The Department of Tourism (DOT) earlier condemned “in the strongest possible terms” the shooting in Makati City, reminding the tourists that the crime “is not reflective of the millions of peace-loving Filipinos across the country.”
The DOT said it is working with relevant government agencies for the continued peace and security of tourists in the country.
