Turon, maruya among world’s best fried desserts

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, February 15) — Two of Filipinos’ favorite afternoon snacks have made it to the world’s roster of 50 best deep-fried desserts, according to the latest list by travel and lifestyle website TasteAtlas.

Turon, which ranked 21st, is made of sliced saba plantains and jackfruit wrapped in spring roll wrappers. It is drizzled with sugar while being fried to achieve the caramel glaze.

Meanwhile, maruya or banana fritters landed in the 36th spot. It is made of mashed bananas or saba, battered, fried, and dusted with sugar.

Indonesia’s pisang goreng, which is also made of bananas or plantains, topped the rankings. It is similar to the Philippines’ maruya and Malaysia’s kuih kodok.

In 2021, adobo and sisig made it to TasteAtlas’ best 100 dishes worldwide. Bibingka was also recently named among the world’s best cakes.
