Heavy rains leave 28 dead, nearly 1.4M affected individuals since Jan. 2

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 16) — The death toll has risen to 28 after heavy rains continued to fall in various parts of the country since Jan. 2, disaster response officials reported on Monday.

The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) recorded a total of 1,397,296 affected individuals with 11 injured and three missing.

Due to the recent low pressure areas (LPAs), shear line and northeast monsoon or amihan, about ₱274.1 million worth of agricultural damage and ₱171.5 million worth of infrastructure damage were also reported.

According to the OCD, about ₱74.237 million worth of assistance was distributed to individuals who were affected by the weather disturbances.

The bad weather has now affected regions II, III, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XI and BARMM, where 10 areas have declared a state of calamity.

The newest LPA was estimated at 180 kilometers East of Butuan City in Agusan del Norte while the amihan affects the extreme Northern Luzon, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration bulletin issued Monday.

As of 4:00 a.m., the state weather bureau also forecast cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms brought by the LPA and shear line in Metro Manila, the Bicol region, Mimaropa and Calabarzon.

Due to the amihan, Batanes, Cagayan and Apayos will experience cloudy skies while the Ilocos region and the rest of CAR region and Cagayan Valley will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with light rains.
