₱19 million worth of sugar shipment seized

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 13) — Authorities have seized a total ₱19 million worth of smuggled sugar at the Manila International Container Port.

A Department of Agriculture (DA) statement said the five-container cargo was placed on hold order last Nov. 29.

It was initially declared as insulators, surge arresters, slippers outsoles, and styrene butadiene rubber.

The shipment was then confiscated on Jan. 11 after the cargo was found to be refined cane sugar.

The DA said the shipment’s consignee, Burias Jang Consumer Goods Trade, will face legal charges for the misdeclaration and misclassification of the shipment, in violation under the Food Safety Act of 2013 and Anti-Agricultural Smuggling Act of 2016.
