Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 11) — Filipino cager Carl Tamayo will be playing for powerhouse Ryukyu Golden Kings in the Japan B.League, the team announced on Wednesday.
In a social media post, the Ryukyu management confirmed that the 21-year-old has signed a contract for the ongoing 2022-23 season.
He will be part of the league’s Asian special quota system.
“I’m honored and very excited to be part (of) this great organization,” Tamayo said in a video message as shared by Ryukyu. “I can’t wait to play with you guys.”
On Tuesday, the University of the Philippines (UP) star forward confirmed that he will forego his remaining playing years in the Fighting Maroons to pursue a professional career in Japan.
During his two-year collegiate stint with UP, Tamayo bagged top awards including Rookie of the Year and Mythical Five member. He had also suited up for the country’s national basketball team.
Ryukyu currently sits at the fifth spot of the B.League standings with a 21-7 win-loss slate.
