Carl Tamayo leaves UP to join Japan B.League

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 10) — UP Fighting Maroons star Carl Tamayo on Tuesday announced he accepted the invitation to play pro basketball in the Japan B.League.

The 21-year-old bared the news in a social media post, where he thanked UP for opening doors to new opportunities.

“I would like to share with everyone that I have been invited to play in the Japanese B-League, and after consulting my family, Coach Gold (Monteverde), my teammates, and the UPMBT (UP Men’s Basketball Team) management, I have decided to accept the offer to play professionally in Japan,” he said.

Speaking to CNN Philippines last September, Tamayo shared he is inclined to play overseas if the opportunity presents itself. He said being exposed to the “basketball brand” of other countries will help players improve their skills.

The former Rookie of the Year also said in his announcement that becoming a professional player has been his dream since he started playing organized basketball.

“It will allow me to care of my family while playing the game that I love,” Tamayo wrote.

“To the UP community and to the team’s fans, salamat kaayo [thank you very much]; I cannot thank you enough for your prayers and for your support. Whatever colors I wear in the years to come, my heart will always bleed maroon,” he added.
