Manila suspends classes, gov’t work for Black Nazarene feast

About 10 to 15 million pilgrims are expected to join the annual traslacion procession for the Feast of the Black Nazarene on Saturday (January 9).

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 4) — The City of Manila on Wednesday suspended classes and government work on Jan. 9 to give way for this year’s feast of the Black Nazarene.

“In order not to unduly crowd the city for purposes not specific to 09 January 2023 religious activities for the Feast of the Black Nazarene, it is essential that work in the city government offices be suspended,” read Executive Order No. 1 issued by Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan.

Classes were also suspended to allow parents and students “to participate in the religious activities.”

The order also imposes a liquor ban from Jan. 7 to 9.

National government offices and private companies in Manila, meanwhile, will have the discretion to suspend work.

The public has been advised to take alternate routes from Jan. 6 to 9 as several roads in the city will be closed for the Black Nazarene feast.
