Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 2) — The Philippine Azkals concluded their 2022 AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup stint with a 2-1 loss against Indonesia Monday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila.
Stephan Schrock’s appearance in an Azkals jersey ended in a stinging defeat as Indonesia scored all of its goals in the first half, carrying them past the group stage of Southeast Asia’s biggest football tournament.
Schrock, who announced on the eve of the match that it would be his final international appearance, set up Sebastian Rasmussen’s goal in the 83rd minute to give the Azkals some life, but an equalizer was not on the horizon for the host nation.
Dendy Sulistyawan got the breakthrough for Indonesia with a header off a throw-in at the 21st minute.
Marselino Ferdinan scored another goal to give Indonesia the commanding edge at the 43rd minute.
The Azkals finished fourth in Group A with three points.
Indonesia, together with defending champion Thailand, will march on to the next phase of the AFF competition after tallying 10 points apiece.
