Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, December 24) — The Broadway musical “The Sound of Music” will be coming to Manila as part of its international tour, GMG Productions announced on Friday.
Staged by the Broadway International Group, the show will be held at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater in Circuit, Makati from March 7 to 26, 2023.
“It is a great privilege to bring this cherished Rodgers & Hammerstein musical to Manila, particularly at this time of global recovery,” Simone Genatt and Marc Routh, co-founders and producers of Broadway International Group, said in a joint statement.
“We are thrilled to light the Broadway musical torch once again in Manila, and to perform this fantastic production in The Philippines,” they added.
The cast includes Jill Christine-Wiley as Maria Rainer and Trevor Martin as Captain von Trapp, with Daniel Fullerton as Rolf, Lauren Kidwell as Mother Abbess, Joshua La Force as Max, Lauren O’Brien as Liesl, and Annie Sherman as Elsa.
“The Sound of Music” features music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, and book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse.
The story revolves around Maria who is tasked to be the governess of Captain von Trapp’s children. Raised in a strict household, the lives of the seven children became vibrant again when Maria brought music to them.
Celebrating its 65th anniversary in 2024, “The Sound of Music” debuted on Broadway in 1959 and won five Tony awards including Best Musical.
Its 1965 classic film version, starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, won five Academy Awards (Oscars), including Best Picture and Best Director for Robert Wise.
The tour, which started in Singapore last November, will also make a stop in India, Malaysia, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and other countries that will be announced.
