
Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, November 15) — The Philippines fell to 80th place in the annual ranking of countries’ ability to attract and retain a skilled workforce.
According to the Global Talent Competitiveness Index 2022 by business school Institut Européen d’Administration des Affaires (INSEAD), the Philippines dropped 10 spots to rank 80th out of 133 countries. In 2021, the Philippines ranked 70th out of 134 countries.
The Philippines posted a lower index score of 38.06 this year, compared to its score of 44.63 in 2021.
In the Eastern and Southeastern Asia and Oceania group, the Philippines ranked 12th out of 15 countries.
Of the 13 East and Southeast Asian nations, the Philippines came in fourth to the bottom of the index, barely ahead of Indonesia (82nd), Laos (99th), and Cambodia (103rd) which was ranked the least in the group.
In the Global Cities Talent Competitiveness Index, Manila fell from 128th last year to 129th this year.
Countries are evaluated based on their ability to enable, attract, grow and retain talent, vocational and technical skills, and global knowledge skills.
In terms of enabling talent, the Philippines’ rank fell from 79th to 90th. Its rank for attracting talent dropped 47 places from 55th in 2021 to 102nd while its place for retaining talent sank five spots from 97th to 102nd.
The country improved in growing the workforce (46th from 48th), in vocational and technical skills (63rd from 90th), and global knowledge skills (49th from 51st).
The top five countries on the Global Talent Competitiveness Index are Switzerland, Singapore, Denmark, the US, and Sweden, respectively.
