Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, November 1) — The local governments of Cavite, Laguna, and Antique on Tuesday announced the suspension of classes this week after Severe Tropical Storm Paeng ravaged their provinces.
Cavite Governor Jonvic Remulla said all classes in his province are cancelled from Nov. 2 to 5.
“Let’s help each other recover first,” he said.
The suspension covers all school levels in the province, Remulla said in a Facebook post.
Disaster management officials earlier said they were validating 12 reported deaths in Calabarzon.
Antique Rep. Antonio Legarda said local officials reported nine people dead and four others missing.
On Tuesday evening, Laguna followed suit and declared the suspension of classes until Nov. 5.
Meanwhile, Antique Governor Rhodora Cadiao signed an executive order declaring the suspension of face-to-face classes at all levels in both public and private schools.
“Some schools in our province during this trying time serve as temporary evacuation sites of the affected families of Typhoon Paeng,” Cadiao said.
Classes in the province will resume on Nov. 7.
“Magtulungan po tayo para makabangon ang ating lalawigan [Let’s work together so that our province can recover],” Governor Ramil Hernandez said.
Cavite, Laguna, and Antique were among the provinces hit hard by Paeng, which triggered flash floods and landslides in several parts of the country.
The NDRRMC has listed 112 reported fatalities from Paeng nationwide, with 82 of those deaths already confirmed.
It said 34 others were reported missing, while 2.49 million people were affected by the severe tropical storm.
Paeng exited the weather monitoring area on Monday.
