MMDA to set up designated PUV stops along Commonwealth Ave

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, October 28) — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is planning to establish designated public utility vehicle (PUV) stops for commuters along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City.

Apart from installing exclusive motorcycle lanes along the road, MMDA acting chairman Carlo Dimayuga said putting up select bus and jeepney stops would ensure safety of road users.

“There should be designated bus and jeepney stops for passengers as part of road safety. It’s about time to instill road discipline among all passenger vehicles,” Dimayuga said during a preliminary meeting with the Quezon City local government unit (LGU), transport groups, and various jeepney operators.

Dimayuga said he sought the assistance of the Quezon City LGU and jeepney operators in identifying the loading and unloading areas along Commonwealth Avenue.

Representatives from transport groups Pasang Masda, ACTO, Stop and Go Transport Coalition, and UV Federation were present in the meeting.

“Through this, we could strategize on how the PUVs could maneuver to their designated stops,” Dimayuga also said. “We would like to confine pedestrians to designated loading and unloading areas.”

Pasang Masda President Obet Martin welcomed MMDA’s plan and thanked Dimayuga for support for the jeepney operators’ sector.

“I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Chairman Dimayuga for addressing the concern of jeepney operators,” Martin said. “We consider it as a welcome development.”

The Metro Manila Council, composed of city mayors, earlier agreed in principle to establish an exclusive motorcycle lane in Commonwealth Avenue to avert road accidents.

MMDA cited a total of 1,010 motorcycle-related accidents along Commonwealth Avenue from January to August 2022.

According to MMDA Resolution No. 22-15, the right outermost lane of Commonwealth Avenue shall be designated as an exclusive bicycle lane.

The second lane and third lane will be designated as exclusive PUV and motorcycle lanes, respectively, while remaining lanes are used by all other motor vehicles.
