Cayetano seeks PSC charter amendment for better funding

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, September 13) — Senator Alan Peter Cayetano has called for the amendment of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) charter to streamline its funding process.

In an organizational meeting on Monday, Cayetano said the PSC would have a regular budget every year if it was a department rather than a commission.

I-amend na lang natin [ang charter ng PSC] para diretso ang transfer ng pera,” he said.

“We cannot wait for us to host another SEA Games, another Asian Games para gumastos (to spend). It would be a privilege to host the Basketball World Games next year. But kung magho-host lang ba tayo gagastos? Dapat tuloy-tuloy na ‘yan (Should we only spend if we host? It should be continuous),” he added.

Cayetano also urged the members of the Senate Committee on Government Corporation and Public Enterprises, which he chairs, to file a bill on PSC charter amendment.

“File the bill, let’s hear it together and ask the House of Representatives to help us para ma-fast break na natin ito bago mag-December (so we could fast break this before December),” he said.

PSC Chairman Noli Eala earlier said the private sector will take a more active role in funding the commission’s programs.

“One of the mandates of the PSC is to enhance funding and appropriation for Philippine sports and it doesn’t have to necessarily all come from government,” he added.
