Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, July 28)— Abra is now under a state of calamity following the powerful magnitude 7 earthquake that hit the area on Wednesday, the provincial government confirmed.
The local government’s Resolution No. 180 Series of 2022 approving the policy was issued on Thursday.
Abra officials cited reports that the earthquake has damaged the province’s major infrastructure facilities, and has already affected 80% of its population.
“In order for the provincial government of Abra to immediately address the needs of the people in the aftermath of the earthquake, it is imperative to declare the entire province of Abra under a state of calamity,” the resolution read.
President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. earlier said there was no need to declare a state of national calamity yet, noting that it could only happen if three regions are heavily affected.
Under the law, however, local officials may place their respective areas under a state of calamity, as long as they have the recommendation of the local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.
