Here’s how you can ensure good nutrition for the whole family

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, July 13) — The COVID-19 pandemic worsened the nutrition problem many Filipinos are experiencing.

Dr. Azucena Milana-Dayanghirang, executive director of the Department of Health’s National Nutrition Council, told CNN Philippines ” the pandemc has greatly impacted nutrition” especiallly in terms of delivery of food and related services, and production of food in the country.

But as Filipinos adapt to the changes brought about by the pandemic, other issues — like rising food prices– have also affected how they maintain good nutrition, she said.

Amid challenges brought by current times, Dayanghirang listed some tips on how Filipinos can still ensure that their family is receiving proper nutrition.

First, the official said, it is important to plan meals wisely and prepare menus in advance. Purchase only what is in your list, she said.

Dayanghirang also said that “healthy food need not be expensive.” Look for cheaper alternatives, like small fish for protein, or root crops for carbohydrates.

The official also reminded the public to eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables everyday. She said it would be better to choose those that are in season since these are cheaper.

Dayanghirang also said it is advisable to follow the pinggang pinoy to ensure a balanced diet that meets the body’s energy and nutrient needs. It would be better to also prepare one-dish meals, like sinigang and tinola, since these are already go, grow, and glow foods.

Last is by doing urban gardening. Recycle water bottles and plant leafy vegetables that can be harvested in only a few weeks like kangkong, and pechay, she said.
