LRT-1, LRT-2 to offer free rides on June 12

The LRT-1 starts its transition to the new "tap and go" ticketing system, which uses contactless beep cards.

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, June 10) — Operators of the country’s light rail transit lines announced on Friday that train rides will be free on select hours on Sunday, June 12.

As part of the celebration of the country’s 124th Independence Day, passengers can enjoy the free rides on both the LRT-1 and the LRT-2 from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Apart from the free rides, LRT-1 operator Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC) has also slashed the total cost of a new Beep card by half from June 12 until September 30.

“We are launching this initiative to make beep™ card more accessible, more affordable for budget-conscious passengers,” LRMC Head of Corporate Communications and Customer Relations Jacqueline Gorospe said in a statement.

This initiative aligns with their campaign to promote the use of contactless transactions in LRT-1 for safety and convenience, she added.

Meanwhile, passengers of the MRT-3 continue to enjoy its services for free after the government extended its “libreng sakay” program until June 30, outgoing President Rodrigo Duterte’s last day of office.
