BSP orders removal of e-sabong transactions in online banking apps

The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor) said it is “okay” with temporarily suspending the operations of seven licensed e-sabong (online cockfighting) groups at the request of the Senate, to give way to an ongoing investigation into the disappearance of 31 players. (FILE PHOTO)

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 27) — Banks should disable the link between e-sabong accounts and e-money wallets, including e-sabong merchant operator accounts, within 30 days, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas said on Friday.

BSP Governor Benjamin Diokno on Friday ordered banking, securities, finance and insurance groups to inform their clients with remaining funds in e-sabong accounts to transfer the money back to their e-wallets within 30 days.

He said BSP-supervised financial institutions should only deal with authorized gambling and online gaming businesses.

President Rodrigo Duterte earlier this month ordered an immediate stop to online cockfighting operations, saying the millions in tax revenue it generates a month is not worth the social damage resulting from the activity.

Thirty-four people linked to online cockfighting remain missing since last year. Charges were filed in two out of eight cases under investigation.
