PNP: Cops involved in human rights violations during drug operations to be held accountable

While government data reveals over 4,000 deaths in anti-illegal drug operations, human rights groups believe the number to be as high as 13,000.

“Layunin din ng PNP na makamit ang hustisya because that’s what law enforcement is all about,” it said in a statement. “The mandate is clear among our personnel—Serve and Protect the people.”

The statement came after the Commission on Human Rights said in its report that the Duterte administration “failed in its obligation to respect and protect the human rights of every citizen, in particular, victims of drug-related killings. It has encouraged a culture of impunity that shields perpetrators from being held to account.”

The PNP said it is aware of the complaints filed against some of its personnel who are possibly involved in the issue. It assured the cases “are already taken into the legal spectrum.”

While it respects CHR’s pronouncements, the PNP also lauded efforts of its staff who are still committed on maintaining peace and order in the country.

“Managot ang dapat managot pero hindi ito dahilan upang panghinaan kami ng loob dahil may bansa pa kaming kailangang pangalagaan,” it also said.

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 21) — The Philippine National Police (PNP) said justice will be served as it assured its personnel involved in human rights violations committed during illegal drug operations will be held accountable.
