Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 10) — Ateneo de Manila University big man Angelo Kouame is named the UAAP Season 84 Most Valuable Player after leading his school to the top seed in the men’s basketball tournament.
After a 13-1 elimination round run by Ateneo, Kouame tallied 69.21 statistical points — computed based on points scored, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks.
Graduating Justine Baltazar of the De La Salle University finished at second place with 63 statistical points.
Rounding up the Mythical Five selection are Zavier Lucero (62 statistical points) and Carl Tamayo (57.64 statistical points), both of University of the Philippines, and La Salle’s Michael Phillips (54.64 statistical points).
Kouame is the first Ateneo player since Kiefer Ravena in 2014 and 2015 to win the MVP.
Meanwhile, Tamayo won the Rookie of the Year award and became the first UP player to nab the top first year-honor since Juan Gomez de Liaño did it in 2017.
The awarding ceremony is scheduled ahead of Game 2 of the UAAP Season 84 finals on May 11 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City. Ateneo is trailing UP after its Game 1 lost.
