Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 30) — The Department of Education (DepEd) on Friday announced that teachers will be allowed not to report on-site from May 2 to 13 in light of the local and national elections on May 9.

In a statement, the DepEd said Education Secretary Leonor Briones, in a joint Execom-Mancom meeting on Friday, approved the recommendation of the regional directors and division superintendents to allow teachers not to report on-site during those dates.

Over 640,000 teachers are expected to serve in the elections across the country, said DepEd.

One of the grounds for the decision stated that teachers, who will serve on May 9, are preparing for the election activities with their schools as official polling places. It includes all immediate post-election activities.

The statement added that teachers who will not serve in the elections shall continue to attend to tasks, such as the accomplishment of school forms, preparation of instructional materials, preparation of learning plans, and the evaluation of students’ outputs during the period.
