UAAP: Ateneo, La Salle fans encouraged to wear pink in rivalry basketball game

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 11) — It looks like we won’t be seeing an ocean of blue and sea of green in the second round meeting between rivals Ateneo de Manila University and De La Salle University in the UAAP Season 84 men’s basketball tournament.

In a public announcement Monday, ADMU president Fr. Bobby Yap, SJ and DLSU president Bro. Bernie Oca, FSC are urging the audience to wear pink during the April 12 encounter at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City. This is in support of Vice President Leni Robredo’s presidential bid for the upcoming May elections.

This isn’t the first time the two institutions are ditching their school colors to make a political statement.

In 2016, fans of the two universities were also urged to wear black to condemn the human rights violations particularly extrajudicial killings under the Duterte administration.

In 2009, yellow was the color at the Smart Arena Coliseum in Quezon City to pay tribute to the late President Cory Aquino.

Ateneo holds the top spot in men’s seniors basketball with a 7-0 win-loss slate. The Katipunan-based squad remained unbeaten after 33 games.

On the other hand, La Salle occupies the third spot with a 5-2 record.
