Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 3) – A magnitude 5.8 earthquake hit east of Bayabas town in Surigao Del Sur on Sunday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.
State seismologists added no aftershocks are expected from the quake, whose epicenter was 75 kilometers northeast of Bayabas.
Phivolcs first measured the 6: 24 p.m. earthquake at magnitude of 6.1, but downgraded it an hour after. The depth was also updated from 45 kilometers to a shallow 1 kilometer.
About an hour later, the institute reported another magnitude 5.8 earthquake in the same area, but again downgraded it to 5.4.
No aftershocks are expected from the second earthquake, Phivolcs reported.
The earthquakes were tectonic in origin, Philvolcs said, meaning they were caused by a movement in the Earth’s crust.
The magnitude 5.8 earthquake was felt at:
Intensity IV – or moderately strong vibration – in Bayabas, Cantilan, and Tandag City in Surigao Del Sur.
Intensity III – or weak shaking – in Rosario and San Agustin towns in Agusan Del Sur.
Intensity II in Surigao City, Surigao Del Norte and Intensity I in Bislig City, Surigao del Sur.
