Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, March 31) – The University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons notched their second straight win in UAAP Season 84 at the expense of the NU Bulldogs, 80-70, on Thursday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Ricci Rivero led the Maroons in scoring with 19 points while rookie big man Carl Tamayo finished with 13 markers and eight boards to improve their slate to 2-1.
After a close contest between the two squads in the first three quarters, UP staged a 13-2 scoring blitz at the start of the fourth period to get away with a 68-61 lead.
The Bulldogs had no answer to their pesky opponents, who even led by as high as 12 points off a Tamayo inside shot in the dying seconds.
Michael Malonzo produced 11 points for NU while Reyland Torres added 10 markers in their second straight defeat that dropped them to a 1-2 record.
UP seeks to clinch their third straight victory against the UE Red Warriors on Saturday at 1 p.m., while NU will open the day against FEU Tamaraws at 10 a.m.
