Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, March 24) – The Cignal HD Spikers completed on Thursday an unlikely sweep of Pool A play in the 2022 PVL Open Conference, securing a top quarterfinals seed as a result.
The HD Spikers edged the Black Mamba Army Lady Troopers in four sets, 25-20, 20-25, 25-17, 25-19, in a game held at the Paco Arena in Manila.
Ria Meneses topscored for Cignal with 15 points, with veteran HD Spiker Rachel Anne Daquis giving a huge impact with 13 points, 18 excellent receptions, and 12 digs.
Cignal finished their pool play outing with an immaculate 4-0 record and will face the BaliPure Purest Water Defenders in the quarters.
Meanwhile, the loss relegated the Army to the classification round to face losing quarterfinalists in April.
The HD Spikers barely survived the challenge presented by the Lady Troopers in the first set, thanks to their timely hits down the stretch.
In the second set, Army found their rhythm with their backline attacks for productive sets that matched the defense presented by Cignal.
The Shaq Delos Santos-mentored HD Spikers rebounded from their lackluster performance in the second set with a well-balanced scoring attack and better team play in the next two to close out the victory.
Usual Cignal scoring suspects Ces Molina and Roselyn Doria helped in their squad’s offensive fightback in the final sets with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Honey Royse Tubino led all scorers with 21 points, as the Lady Troopers finished their pool play campaign winless after four losses.
