Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, March 13) — Retired Associate Justice Antonio Eduardo Nachura has died, the Supreme Court announced on Sunday. He was 80.
“We offer our sincere and deep condolences and prayers. Justice Nachura will always be remembered as one of those few who served in the highest levels of all three branches of the government,” said Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo in a statement.
Nachura was Associate Justice from 2007 to 2011. He disposed of about 1,690 cases and penned 640 full-length decisions and resolutions.
Before joining the high court, Nachura was the Solicitor General and served a term of ten months, arguing eight cases.
He was also a congressman and chairperson of the Committee on Higher and Technical Education during which he authored Republic Act No. 9163, or the National Service Training Program Act.
The Supreme Court said Nachura dedicated his life to education, having been an education undersecretary and a law professor and dean in his alma mater, Arellano Law School.
He was the chairperson of the 2009 Bar Examinations Committee and wrote the book Outline Reviewer in Political Law.
