Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, March 3) – After his stunning knockout victory in his ONE Championship lightweight debut, Filipino mixed martial arts fighter Drex Zamboanga sets his sights on fighting former division champion Christian Lee.
“I’ve been watching his fights from way back, and I feel like we’d have an interesting match skill-wise,” said Zamboanga.
Zamboanga added he is motivated to fight Lee after he finished Indian foe Rahul Raju in 65 seconds in a sensational first-round knockout victory in ONE: Full Circle last Feb. 25.
“I would like to be in a higher division, either lightweight or featherweight, because I’m more comfortable fighting in these weight classes. I’m still relatively big in lightweight so there won’t be problems for me to remain in this division,” said Zamboanga, who leaped from flyweight to lightweight.
The Filipino fighter out of Marrok Force said he will spend some time with his family in the country as he waits for his next lightweight bout.
Lee tallied a six-game winning streak in his reign as ONE lightweight champion until he lost the crown in a controversial unanimous decision to Ok Rae Yoon last September at ONE: Revolution.
The Canadian-Singaporean MMA sensation remains the top lightweight contender in the ONE rankings, while the Filipino fighter has yet to crack the top five.
Interestingly, Zamboanga’s sister Denice is also raring to fight Lee’s sibling Angela, the defending ONE women’s atomweight titlist, for the crown.
