(CNN Philippines, January 18) — Japan B.League second division team Earthfriends Tokyo Z announced Tuesday that it has canceled the contract of Filipino cager Juan Gomez de Liaño.
“We have decided to cancel the contract for the B.LEAGUE 2021-22 season after a mutual agreement with Juan Gomez de Liaño,” the squad said in a statement.
“We had a lot of discussions between the team and the players, and it was like this, but during that time, we were very sorry that we couldn’t explain the situation to everyone,” it added.
Gomez de Liaño played in 17 of Tokyo Z’s games this season. He averaged 5.3 points, 2.4 assists, and 2.2 rebounds in only 16 minutes of action.
“Thank you Tokyo Z for giving me the opportunity and opening doors for me to play in such a beautiful country,” said the 22-year-old guard, who was a former University of the Philippines and Gilas Pilipinas player.
With this development, Gomez de Liaño will be added to Tokyo Z’s free player negotiation list which paves the way for him to enter negotiation with other teams looking to bolster their backcourt rotation.
Gomez de Liaño is one of the two Filipino imports in the second division of the Japan B.League, with Kemark Cariño playing for Aomori Wat’s.
Tokyo Z currently ranks 13th in the second division with a 5-25 win-loss record.
