Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 9) — The country could expect new COVID-19 cases to soar higher than 30,000 on Sunday, the OCTA Research Group said.
OCTA fellow Guido David said the country might log another record-high in new cases on Jan. 9, as new infections are projected to surpass the 30,000 mark.
On Saturday, the country tallied 26,458 cases, the highest since the pandemic began in 2020. It surpassed the record of 26,303 from Sept. 11 last year.
In Metro Manila, where risk for COVID-19 is “critical,” David said the positivity rate has breached 50%.
“While cases continue to climb in the NCR (National Capital Region), Calabarzon, and Central Luzon, cases are also starting to increase in many other parts of the country,” he added.
Data from the Health Department showed most infections recorded on Jan. 8 were from Metro Manila with 16,233. The provinces of Cavite and Rizal followed with 1,947 and 1,707, respectively. Bulacan had 1,308 fresh cases while Laguna had 1,136.
Aside from provinces in Calabarzon and Central Luzon, there were areas in Ilocos, Cordillera Administrative Region, Cagayan Valley, and Davao that each recorded over 100 new infections.
The Philippines’ overall case count now stands close to three million at 2,936,875.
Positivity rate in the NCR exceeds 50% but is it slowing down? Will NCR peak soon?
