Duterte wants higher allowances for medical volunteers

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 6) – President Rodrigo Duterte has vowed to increase the special risk allowance of medical volunteers as he hopes to boost the sector’s manpower amid the “exponential rise” in COVID-19 infections.

During a recorded meeting aired Thursday night, Duterte urged medical school graduates waiting for licensure exam results to join the government’s fight against the coronavirus, acknowledging that the country faces a health workforce shortage.

“As I’ve said, kulang tayo ng (we lack) medical guys. This is just a suggestion – if it’s not good, then let it pass from ear to ear… Maybe they can help this country by volunteering to assist us,” the President said.

“If you want to help, I can give you the allowance,” he added.

After learning from Health Sec. Francisco Duque the current special risk allowance of medical volunteers, Duterte said ₱5,000 is “too small” given the risks of contracting the virus.

The Health chief shared the same sentiment, noting the amount “will not really attract” volunteers.

“This should be given more. You take into account the possibility that they themselves will get [COVID-19],” the President said. “To those who are entertaining the idea of getting into the roll of volunteers, I will raise the amount.”

“I don’t think we’ll run out of money. [Finance Secretary Carlos] Dominguez is a very resourceful person,” Duterte added.

Health workers across the country have long aired their frustrations over the Health department’s alleged neglect in providing their COVID-19 benefits.
