Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 3) — The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) announced Monday it has postponed all Governors’ Cup games this week.

The development comes after the national government placed Metro Manila under Alert Level 3 from Jan. 3 to Jan. 15 due to a surge in COVID-19 cases in the region.

For the PBA to resume its Governors’ Cup, the league needs the approval from the Games and Amusements Board and local government units where it will be holding the games.

Before the sudden increase in COVID-19 cases, the PBA was allowed to host a 50% percent capacity crowd at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

The country on Sunday recorded 4,600 new COVID-19 cases, the highest single-day increase since Oct. 24, 2021.
