UP suspends entrance exam again for next school year

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, December 7) — For the second consecutive time, the University of the Philippines will do away with its college admission test (UPCAT) for academic year 2022-2023.

The state university made the announcement on Tuesday, citing the “immense logistical challenge” of administering the exam in its campuses and 95 testing centers nationwide “while the trajectory of the pandemic remains uncertain.”

The memorandum, dated Nov. 18, was issued by the UP Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs after university councils across the UP system “voted overwhelmingly in favor of the motion.”

The UPCAT for academic year 2021-2022 was also suspended due to coronavirus risks.

The university said it will again use the admissions scoring model applied for the freshmen student intake this school year, subject to some fine-tuning.

The model was developed by data scientists from its Office of Admissions and was “refined by a working group of experts designated by their respective CUs (constituent universities),” UP added.
