NTC orders telcos to warn subscribers on scam texts offering fake jobs

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, November 23) – The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has directed leading telecommunication networks in the country to warn its subscribers on scam messages offering fake jobs.

In a memo dated Nov. 19, the NTC ordered Digitel Mobile Philippines Inc., Globe Telecoms Inc., Smart Communications Inc., and Dito Telecommunity Corporation to text blast its subscribers regarding the recent spate of text messages offering dubious jobs.

The agency also asked the companies to submit their compliance report to the Office of the Commissioner on or before Dec. 14.

National Privacy Commission (NPC) commissioner Mon Liboro revealed on Tuesday that an “organized global syndicate” was behind the scam text messages.

Liboro added he will meet with the telco networks on Wednesday to discuss the matter.

On Monday, Senator Joel Villanueva appealed to the NPC and NTC to put a stop to these schemes, where subscribers are tricked into giving their personal data.
